I don’t know about you, but when I get to the end of the school year all I want to do is crash. This past year has been especially crazy for me. Overall, it’s been great. We accomplished so much and saw so many lives impacted for Christ, but I feel like I’ve been running at 80 mph for too long and my engine can’t take it anymore. If I don’t rest, I’m liable to break down.
Hopefully I’m not coming across as overly dramatic. I know I’ll be ok, but I also know I need to rest. As campus ministers the best time for that is over the summer and I’m ready. It would be easy to jump into assessment and then right into planning for the fall, but rest needs to happen first.

I’m being reminded that a rested leader is a more effective leader.

That seems like such an obvious concept, but sometimes we think we’re most effective if we’re busy accomplishing things.
Last year I was out on a walk and stopped at a pond. As I was praying and enjoying the evening God spoke this to me, “Water hardly ever stands still and when it’s moving you can’t see a clear reflection. But when it is perfectly still you can see a clear, perfect reflection. You must take time to stand still in order to see a perfect reflection of who you are and who I am in you.”
When there’s constantly something demanding our attention it’s difficult to pause and reflect. God has been reminding me that as the school year comes to a close I need to take time to “stand still.”
So, before you jump into the next thing, before the busyness of summer is upon us, before you do anything else – I encourage you to stop, pause and reflect. “Stand still” for a little bit and when you are able to operate from rest I believe that your ministry will be that much more effective.
