Start a Library

A month ago I talked about how leaders are readers. With all the reading that students do for their classes how can we encourage them to read books during college that can help them grow as leaders and in their walk with God?

When I was in college I found it hard enough to read my Bible regularly let alone other non-assigned books, but when I think back I had more than enough time to read both the Bible and other books if I had only put forth the effort. I visited the SUNY Oswego BASIC group last semester and I noticed that they had started up a library. Every week they brought a box of books to the meeting that students could “take out.” They had a sign up sheet so that they knew who had signed out each book. It would be pretty easy to get people in the church or students to donate books to a library for your group or if you have a budget you could put some of the money towards purchasing books.

I think it’s important to realize that student’s minds are being filled with what their professors and textbooks are saying. One good way to counteract that and stay focused on the Lord during college is by filling your mind with Christian books that promote godliness. To get your library started I have posted some good books for college students in the section on the left called Books to Read, which I will be updating every so often.

On a side note, due to the BASIC conference being this weekend, I will be taking a week off from blogging next week to get some rest. I can’t wait to see you at the conference! If you haven’t signed up yet register here!
