A couple BASIC conferences ago we made t-shirts that said, “Join the Movement.” While I think these shirts looked pretty cool and could definitely be a good conversation starter, I was reminded of something God has instilled in me since I started working in college ministry when I wore mine the other day.
The phrase on those shirts is “Join the Movement,” not “Start a Movement.” Sometimes on our campuses we can feel like we have to work hard to see any fruit. It’s especially easy to feel that way when we’re getting an increase of leadership training, resources, tips for strategic planning, etc. All those things are good and obviously as you can see from my blog I would advocate for taking advantage of them, but those things are meant to be tools that we use as we partner with God in what He is doing.
Too often I begin jumping into planning out what I’d like to see our group do in an upcoming semester and I find myself having to put the brakes on and ask, “Lord, what are You already doing on this campus and how can we join the movement?” Have you dedicated time this summer to pray and ask God what He’s doing that you can be a part of? We will always be far more successful and satisfied when we get a revelation of His heart and passionately join Him in what He is doing.
Isaiah 43:19 (NIV) “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”
