With the explosion of the Internet and media over the last 15 years we’re now surrounded by messages more than ever before. While technology has in many ways benefitted our society there are times when it’s good to take a break. With all the media we have at our fingertips it’s rare that we take time to stop, reflect, and spend time with God.
The theme for BASIC’s upcoming fall conference is Blueprint: Discovering God’s Plans for Your Life. I think the biggest hindrance to discovering God’s plans for our lives is that we don’t spend enough quality time in prayer and listening to God’s voice. As your group prepares for the upcoming conference I would like to suggest challenging your students to a one week media fast. Encourage them to get off of Facebook, turn off the TV, and use their phones for only necessary communication in the week leading up to the conference.
When I was in college I decided to fast meals and most media for 40 days with a couple other friends in our BASIC group. It was definitely challenging, but as I committed the time that I would normally spend on those things to the Lord in prayer, Bible reading, and worship I realized the depth it was bringing to my relationship with God. Many of the most influential things God has spoken to me have been in times of prayer and waiting before the Lord. Taking the time to focus and listen to the Lord is definitely an acquired discipline, but if your students begin to dedicate themselves to this before the conference I’m believing that they will hear great things from God that weekend.
